Clinical Utilities
Elevated alpha-fetoprotein concentrations (>3.0 ng/mL) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are associated with intracranial germ-cell tumors.
This test is performed using the Beckman Coulter chemiluminescent method. Values obtained from different assay methods cannot be used interchangeably. AFP levels, regardless of value, should not be interpreted as absolute evidence of the presence or absence of disease. The use of AFP as a tumor marker is not recommended in pregnant females.
