Collection Info:
1. Instruct the patient to brush his / her teeth and/or rinse mouth well with water.
2. Instruct the patient to expectorate a deep cough specimen in a plastic container labeled with the patient's name, hospital number and
date of collection.
3. Collect first morning, "deep cough" sputum specimen, NOT SALIVA OR NASAL ASPIRATE.
4. Immediately add 30ml of CytoLyt Solution to the specimen, and gently shake to suspend the specimen in the preservative. 5. Deliver the
specimen to the MGH Cytology Department as soon as possible. CytoLyt Solution is a methanol based transport media that will preserve
cells for eight days at room temperature.
6. Marquette General Hospital inpatient specimens without preservative should be delivered immediately to the Cytology Department.
NOTE:
Pertinent clinical information regarding previous malignancy, drugs, radiation therapy, or history of alcohol abuse or smoking is required for processing.
