Methods

Immunochemiluminometric (ICMA) or double antibody radioimmunoassay (RIA) when anti-Tg autoantibodies are present

Clinical Utilities

Comprehensive thyroglobulin can be used to monitor recurrence of thyroid cancer. All specimens are tested for the presence of antithyroglobulin autoantibodies (anti-Tg). Specimens negative for the presence of anti-Tg are reflexed to thyroglobulin testing by ICMA, and specimens positive for the presence of anti-Tg are reflexed to thyroglobulin testing by RIA. Specimens submitted for comprehensive thyroglobulin testing are stored frozen for one year to allow for future testing.
