Methods

Meridian Illumigene Pertussis DNA Amplification Assay

Clinical Utilities

This assay targets the IS481 insertional element present in B. pertussis, B. holmesii, and one strain of B. bronchiseptica.  B. holmesii may cause clinical illness similar to B. pertussis.  B. bronchiseptica is a rare cause of infection in humans.  B. parapertussis is not detected by this assay; however, illness caused by B. parapertussis is generally milder than illness caused by B. pertussis because the bacteria do not produce pertussis toxin.
